Rufus

Rufus is a free and open-source portable application for Microsoft Windows that can be used to format and create bootable USB flash drives or Live USB s. It is developed by Pete Batard of Akeo Consulting.
Rufus is a free (gpl) Windows program, being part of the category Software utilities with subcategory CD & DVD (more specifically Disk Images) and has been created by Pete Batard.
It's available for users with the operating system Windows XP and prior versions, and you can download it only in English. The program version is 1.1.6 and it has been updated on 3/30/2012.
Since the software was added to our catalog in 2012, it has already achieved 35.178 installations, and last week it had 311 downloads.
Rufus is a reasonably light program that doesn't take up as much storage space than most programs in the section Software utilities. It's a program frequently downloaded in many countries such as India, Pakistan, and United States.

Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc.
It can be especially useful for cases where:

  • you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.)
  • you need to work on a system that doesn't have an OS installed
  • you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS
  • you want to run a low-level utility
Despite its small size, Rufus provides everything you need!
Oh, and Rufus is fast. For instance it's about twice as fast as UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer or Windows 7 USB download tool, on the creation of a Windows 7 USB installation drive from an ISO. It is also marginally faster on the creation of Linux bootable USB from ISOs.

System Requirements:

Windows XP or later, 32 or 64 bit doesn't matter. Once downloaded, the application is ready to use.
I will take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the translators who made it possible for Rufus, as well as this webpage, to be translated in various languages. If you find that you can use Rufus in your own language, you should really thank them!

Non exhaustive list of ISOs Rufus is known to work with:

Arch Linux, Archbang, BartPE/pebuilder, CentOS, Damn Small Linux, Fedora, FreeDOS, Gentoo, gNewSense, Hiren's Boot CD, LiveXP, Knoppix, Kubuntu, Linux Mint, NT Password Registry Editor, OpenSUSE, Parted Magic, Slackware, Tails, Trinity Rescue Kit, Ubuntu, Ultimate Boot CD, Windows XP (SP2 or later), Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, etc.

What's New:

  • Fix non-listing of drives that are opened for write access by another process
  • Report external processes that may be preventing disk access (in the log)
  • Improve Windows To Go support for Windows 10 Creators Update
  • Don't report an error on checkdisk failure
  • Update GRUB 2.0 and Grub4DOS to latest
  • Other fixes and improvements
